History

Designer Daniel Quasar created the Progress Pride flag in 2018, adding an arrow to the six-stripe rainbow flag. It builds on Philadelphia's 2017 flag, which added black and brown stripes, and on the colors of the transgender flag.

In Quasar's words, “The arrow points to the right to show forward movement,” while “being along the left edge shows that progress still needs to be made.” Quasar raised funds on Kickstarter to produce the first flags, and the design quickly spread worldwide.

Quasar first released the design under a non-commercial Creative Commons license. It is now CC0, released to the public domain, so it is free to use in any work, commercial or non-commercial. In 2021, Valentino Vecchietti added the intersex flag's colors to create the Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride flag.
