Rainbow and umbrella pride flags

Umbrella flags stand for the whole LGBTQ+ community rather than one identity. The best known is the rainbow flag, which artist Gilbert Baker designed for the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day parade in June 1978.

Baker's first flag had eight stripes, each with its own meaning. Fabric shortages and mass production trimmed it to seven stripes and then to the six-stripe rainbow most people know today, and in 2017 Baker made a nine-stripe version that added lavender for diversity.

Other umbrella flags build on the rainbow to bring more people in, like Philadelphia's 2017 flag with black and brown stripes, and the Victory over AIDS flag, which adds a black stripe in memory of the people lost to AIDS.
