History
Sapphic covers women and nonbinary people who are attracted to women, named for the ancient Greek poet Sappho.
The most popular sapphic flag was designed by Tumblr user lesbeux in 2015, with pink stripes for love and a pair of violets in the center. In 2017 Tumblr user pride-color-schemes made a simpler version with a single violet. Violets link to Sappho's poetry and to The Captive, a 1927 Broadway play whose audiences wore violets in support of its lesbian characters.
