History
The drag pride flag came out of a 2016 contest run by the Austin International Drag Festival, which asked for “a lasting symbol of a community that loves, shares, embraces and entertains.” The winning design, announced on March 11, 2016, is credited to Veranda L'Ni.
It was made to represent drag performers of every gender: queens, kings, and everyone in between. Purple stands for passion, white for the blank canvas of the performer, and blue for self-expression and loyalty, while the crown honors leadership and the stars the many forms of drag.
An earlier drag flag, the Feather Pride Flag, was created in 1999 by artist Sean Campbell and features a phoenix as a symbol of rebirth.
