The first butch lesbian flag was shared on Tumblr in 2016 by Dorian Rutherford. Historian Caroline Radesky reads its cool blues as a response to the pink lesbian flag, which some felt centered femme lesbians.
A second butch flag, with red, orange, white, yellow, and brown stripes, was published on the Tumblr blog butchspace in 2017. Both are in use.
