History
Ann Magill, a writer with cerebral palsy, created the disability pride flag in 2019 with bright zigzag stripes on black. The zigzag showed the barriers disabled people have to work around.
In 2021 she redesigned it with the community: straight, muted stripes and a new order, because the original could trigger symptoms in people with visually triggered disabilities and was hard to read with red and green colorblindness. The diagonal band stands for light and creativity cutting through the walls that separate disabled people from the rest of society.
Magill waived her copyright and placed the flag in the public domain, so anyone is free to use and remix it.
